On May 3 and 4, 2020, I decided to do a bikepacking trip on the Flint Hills Trail State Park. My plan was to ride east from Council Grove, Kansas to Osawatomie, Kansas over the two days. On my first day I would ride 52 miles from Council Grove to Pomona Lake State Park where I would camp for the night. On the 2nd day, I would ride another 42 miles to Osawatomie.
I had two primary goals for the trip; 1) experience the entire trail so that I can provide better information about trail conditions to customers and potential trail riders; 2) Try out my new Surly Troll Bikepacking Bicycle!
What made this trip unique was that the country was in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fortunately, the Kansas State Parks are still open during the pandemic and the trail provided plenty of space for social distancing. In fact, with the exception of a stop at Casey’s I only encountered a few people on the entire trip.
I tried to document the trip with videos and photos. This video documents the first day of the trip. I started at around 1:00 pm thinking that I would have plenty of time to get to Pomona Lake to set up camp before dark. However, as you will see in the video everything did not go as planned.
I’m putting together a second video to document the rest of the trip. I’ll also provide some details on the things I learned. I hope you enjoy the video.
